🤔 Still Have Concerns About Using BigQuery?

You’re not alone! We’ve heard a litany of concerns about using BigQuery. Here are some questions we’ve gotten, and our answers are below:

Do I really need BigQuery? Is this really going to save me money?

Once you learn BigQuery and how to build a datamart, you will only pay for the queries you run as opposed to how much data you store. We will show you how to create optimized and efficient queries to keep your costs as low as possible ($5k or less).

The alternative is likely spending $10,000 to $50,000+ a year on data storage costs with other data warehousing services and SQL servers, and that doesn’t include potentially having to hire developers and data analysts to help build it.

Wait, isn’t BigQuery supposed to be free? What gives?

While BigQuery does not charge to store your data, it isn’t free to run queries against your data stored in BigQuery. However, there are ways to optimize your queries to keep costs very low (and we cover how to do this in our program). Otherwise, your bills could run into thousands per month or more.

An alternative is to store your data with other third-parties. But most charge well over $10,000 per year just to keep your data with them (and they will “own” that data, not you).

What’s the benefit of using Analytics Canvas as an intermediary instead of pushing GA4 data directly into BigQuery?

Massive cost savings and predictable monthly payments.

Querying GA4 data directly through BigQuery is more expensive and unpredictable. People who do that end up paying $5k/mo to fuel Looker Studio reports because they’re not optimized.

If you run queries on intermediary tables through Analytics Canvas, it prevents your BigQuery account from getting charged with variable bills, reducing costs by 10-50x compared to alternatives.

There are free BigQuery courses out there. Why should I take this one?

Free courses tend to be more theoretical than actionable. They also don’t show any optimization and automation strategies, nor do they give you the hands-on experience or personalized support like our program does. They don’t talk about presentation layers such as Looker Studio, either. 

Taking a free course and implementing their recommendations could cost you thousands in unwanted bills, and ineffective data that needs a consultant to unwind.

I was going to hire someone to build a BigQuery “data lake”. Are you saying I can learn to do this myself?

You absolutely can learn how to do it yourselves. Building a “data lake” is exactly what we will be helping you achieve in this program. We will talk about planning, mapping, collecting, pushing to BigQuery, and then reporting inside Looker Studio. 

You can pretty much pull in any source into BigQuery, but the connectors will determine how much of it is automated versus manual data pulls.

I know MySQL. How much would that help me in BigQuery?

There is a lot of similarity between the two platforms in terms of table structure, queries needed to pull data, etc. One advantage of BigQuery is that it accepts inputs from Google systems, and that it’s hosted in the cloud so you don’t need your own infrastructure.

While BigQuery is geared to run more efficiently than MySQL, you will catch on more quickly than someone who doesn't have database experience.

I don't know how to use SQL, nor do I want to deal with it.

While SQL may seem daunting at first, we’ll show you how to develop your ideal data structure in BigQuery. This will make it easy for you to create great-looking reports and visualizations from your data without requiring any SQL knowledge.

BigQuery sounds like too much of a hassle. I’d rather let someone else do the “heavy lifting” because don't want to spend time learning it.
