Cloudflare's CEO Confirmed It: Bots Now Outnumber Humans Online

So Who, Exactly, Is Visiting Your Website Right Now?

If you've been optimizing campaigns, emails, or budgets off numbers that include bot behavior, you may have been painting yourself into a corner for months.

57.4% of HTML requests on Cloudflare's network came from bots in late June 2026 (Cloudflare Radar).

What it feels like on the other side

You open GA4 on Monday morning and you know what you're looking at. The conversion rate dip from last month? You can tell your boss whether that's real or whether bots drove it. The traffic spike? You know which AI crawler caused it and whether it matters.

You have evidence to check before you blame Google for the drop.

When a client asks why their numbers changed, you can show them the share of their sessions labeled as not human.

The problem with your numbers right now

Earlier in June 2026, Cloudflare's CEO announced bots had passed human traffic online for the first time.

Across all web traffic, automated traffic hit 53% in 2025.

Source: Thales/Imperva 2026 Bad Bot Report

ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Amazon's crawler, AI agents browsing on someone's behalf. Inside GA4, unknown bots and AI agents are hiding in plain sight, and your conversion data is quietly rotting around them.

Your reports have changed, and you can't tell how much is bots.

Conversion rates are down and engagement looks off, and some of the traffic comes from sources you don't recognize.

It's easy to blame Google's algorithm, and maybe that's part of it. But it might be that you're optimizing for the wrong thing.

If AI crawlers and bots are landing in your reports alongside real visitors, your baselines are off. Your conversion rate is calculated against a denominator that includes things that will never buy anything.

You're making decisions on numbers you can't fully trust, and you don't have a way to know how far off they are.

GA4 already filters some bots, and it won't show you which ones or how many.

Google's own documentation confirms it: GA4 automatically excludes traffic from known bots and spiders.

You can't turn that off, and you can't see how much was excluded (Google Support).

The bots GA4 doesn't recognize walk right through that filter and land in your data looking like visitors.

The things people try that don't quite work

Trusting GA4's built-in filter to handle it.

GA4's filter catches the bots it already knows about. New AI crawlers, AI agents browsing pages on behalf of a user's prompt, anything that looks like a browser because it runs one: those get through.

Flipping a "block bots" switch and hoping for the best.

Blocking tools can stop crawlers, but a blunt rule can't always tell a crawler from a customer. One site had real shoppers getting challenged at checkout for weeks before anyone caught it.

Ignoring it and attributing the drop to Google.

Google search traffic declining is real. But if bots are also moving through your conversion funnel in your reports, the drop you're reacting to may not be the drop you think it is, and you won't see that until you set up something that shows you.

Counting Bots vs. Counting Buyers

Old wayYou notice your bounce rate improved significantly after you changed the page layout, so you roll the change out to six other pages and write a whole case study about it, and three weeks later someone points out that your bounce rate improved the same week a wave of bot traffic hit the site and padded your session counts, and now you don't know which pages actually improved and which ones just got lucky with the timing.

New wayOne custom dimension labels bots and humans in GA4.

Old wayYour agency runs a traffic quality audit for a new client, and you pull their GA4 data and see sessions, engagement rates and goal completions that look reasonable on the surface, but you have this nagging feeling that the numbers are soft, and you can't point to anything specific, so you write "traffic quality looks acceptable" in your audit doc and move on even though you know that sentence means almost nothing.

New wayYou import a GTM container that labels traffic at the source.

Old wayYou spend an afternoon trying to figure out if the spike in direct traffic last Tuesday was real humans or bots, so you check the landing pages, check the device breakdown, check the city data, check session duration, and none of it gives you a clear answer, just more questions, and eventually you decide it was probably fine and you move on because you have actual client work to do and you can't keep chasing ghosts in a dashboard.

New waySuspicious sessions get flagged as they land.

Old wayA client asks if AI crawlers are hitting their site and pulling their content, and you say "probably" because you know it's happening everywhere right now, but you don't actually know how often, what kind, or whether they should care, and the client looks at you like they expected a more confident answer, and you make a mental note to figure this out eventually but you're not sure where to even start.

New wayYou build a written crawler policy with yes/no switches.

Old wayYou want to offer AI traffic monitoring as a service because you keep seeing it come up in conversations, but you don't know what to charge, you don't know how to scope it, and you don't have a way to explain it to a client that doesn't make their eyes glaze over, so it stays on your list of things you'll figure out when you have more time, which is never.

New wayYou leave with a pricing calculator and a pitch deck.

Workshop: AI Traffic Control by Jeff Sauer. Thursday, November 5, 12pm ET
Illustration of Jeff Sauer teaching a class of marketers at laptops, in front of a radar screen sorting traffic into Human, AI Agent and Bot runways

AI Traffic Control

This is a live 2-hour workshop with Jeff Sauer. Jeff builds it with you live, step by step, and you leave with the container and the reports in your own GA4 and Tag Manager.

In two hours, you walk away with a working system inside your own GA4 and GTM. Here's what we build together:

  1. 1

Find your real bot exposure. You pull your own AI crawler numbers and get a floor on how much of your traffic is software before we touch a single tag.

  2. 2

Tag it at the source in GTM. You import a ready-to-use container that reads browser signals and labels the visits it can recognize before they land in GA4.

  3. 3

Read it clearly in GA4. You set up a custom dimension, a saved comparison, and an exploration that splits human visitors from labeled bot traffic, shown on real MeasureU data so you know what to look for on yours.

  4. 4

Decide what gets through. You write a short AI crawler policy for your site (or your client's) and work through the yes/no on each type of crawler, with Cloudflare as the hands-on example.

  5. 5

Package it for clients. You get a setup scope, a one-page client explainer, and a monthly AI traffic report template you can send the day after the workshop.

  6. 6

Price it. We fill in a live pricing calculator for an example client and walk through an 8-slide pitch deck you can use to sell this as a service.

Thursday, November 5, 2026. 12 PM ET. Replay included.

What you'll be able to do

Expose the bots and AI agents your GA4 is already letting through. GA4 filters out known bots automatically, but it won't tell you how many, and unknown bots and agents running a real browser walk right in.

Classify every JavaScript-running visit in GA4 as human, automated, suspicious, or declared AI agent. That's what the GTM container does, sending a clean label into GA4 so your real visitor data stays separate from everything else.

See named AI crawlers at the site and host level, and take control of them. Cloudflare's AI bot policies, crawler controls, and server logs show you GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Amazonbot and more; you'll know which pages they hit and which settings to switch on.

Have real evidence for what's happening to your traffic before you make another decision. If performance has declined, you'll be able to see whether bots are a factor on your actual site, not just in theory.

Recognize the optimization trap and get out of it. When your metrics include bot behavior, you optimize for the wrong thing; separating the signal from the noise changes every decision downstream.

Walk into a new era of measurement fluent in the language everyone else is still learning. You'll understand what's changed, what it means for how you track, and whether you personally need to act.

For agencies and consultants: you leave with a client kit built so you can offer this as a service: a setup scope, a one-page client explainer, a monthly AI traffic report template, a pricing and value calculator, and an 8-slide pitch deck you can put your logo on.

The price stays $199 either way.

Brain Gainz: Tracking AI Agents with Jason Packer, November 12, 2026, 11 AM ET

Bonus: Jason Packer on AI agents, November 12

AI agents are the harder problem. An AI assistant that browses the web on a user's behalf can run a real Chrome browser and look like a human visitor in your data. To GA4 and to your bot filter, it reads as a person.

Jason runs Quantable Analytics, wrote Google Analytics Alternatives, and spoke at MeasureSummit 2026. His session is about exactly this. He'll go further than the main workshop on how AI agents actually visit a page, what signals exist, and what you can realistically detect.

Included for everyone who registers and for MeasureU Pro members.

Who this is for

This is for you if:

  • You run an agency or consult, and you want to offer bot and AI traffic reporting to clients.
  • You're an in-house analyst or marketer and your conversion rates or engagement look off.
  • You're a founder, CMO or publisher deciding what to do about AI crawlers on your site.

This isn't for you if:

  • You've never opened GA4 admin or Tag Manager and don't have someone who can.
  • You need an exact bot count. What you get is a floor you can stand behind.
  • You want someone to change the settings on your live site for you during the session.

FAQ

+ Is the workshop live or recorded?
Live, on Thursday, November 5, 2026 at 12 PM ET. The replay is included for everyone who registers, so if you can't make it at that time, you'll have it.
+ What if I can't attend live?
Register anyway. You get the full replay plus all the templates and deliverables. The only thing you miss is asking questions in real time.
+ Do I need to be technical?
You need to be able to get around GA4 admin and Tag Manager. If you've worked in both before, you're in the right place. Jeff explains what he's doing as he goes.
+ I'm not on Cloudflare. Does this still apply to me?
Yes. The workshop covers GA4 and Tag Manager for everyone. The crawler controls section includes a path for WordPress, Vercel, Netlify, and server logs, so you don't need Cloudflare.
+ Will this catch every AI agent visiting my site?
No. An AI agent running a real Chrome browser can still look human in your data. Bots that never run JavaScript don't show up in GA4 at all, which is part of why the crawler side matters alongside the analytics side. What you get is a reliable floor you can stand behind. Jason Packer's November 12 session goes further on the harder detection problem.
+ Doesn't GA4 already have an AI channel?
GA4 has a default channel for AI tools. It tracks visits that come from AI tools, meaning someone clicked a link in ChatGPT and landed on your site. It doesn't identify visits that are AI or bots (Google Support). Those are two different things, and this workshop is about the second one.
+ What do I get if I buy before October 29?
A seat at a live group conversation on email metrics and bots on October 29. Jeff opens with what he found in his own email numbers, then it's an open discussion. The price stays $199 either way. The deadline only affects this bonus.
+ Is it free for MeasureU Pro members?
Yes. Free for MeasureU Pro members.
+ What's the refund policy?
Full refund, any time up until the date of the workshop on November 5.
