Find Out If Your Analytics Tool Can Catch a Bot That Looks Like a Browser

Search crawlers and uptime monitors say what they are in their user agent, and most analytics platforms filter that list out automatically. Headless browsers and scrapers that run your tracking code in what looks like a normal session don't say what they are, and most platforms document nothing about catching them. This guide checked all 32 analytics platforms against their own documentation, including GA4, and only 3 document catching both kinds automatically. It ranks every platform best to worst and tells you what to do with the grade yours got.

What's Inside

See Where Your Platform Ranks

The leaderboard ranks all 32 analytics platforms from best to worst at keeping bots out of your numbers, with a one-line reason for every grade.

Know What to Check in Your Account

Every platform page has the same rows: Known bots, Disguised bots, Default and plan, What you see, The verdict, and the Source. The Default and plan row says whether the filter you need is on, off, or behind a paid tier.

Know What to Do With Your Grade

Strong, Partial, Weak, or None, each grade comes with a next step. Turn on a filter that was sitting switched off, or stop trusting a number your platform never documented a way to verify.

Written for marketers and small-agency owners who run GA4 and GTM, and who also run a second analytics tool. Every grade shows where its evidence came from.

Two kinds of bots show up in your analytics. Known bots say what they are in their user agent (search crawlers, SEO tools, uptime monitors), and most platforms filter that list out automatically. Disguised bots run your tracking code in a browser that looks like a person’s, and catching those takes something beyond the user agent: a data center IP range, a behavior pattern, or a browser signal. Unless your platform documents a way to catch the second kind, some of it is sitting in your numbers right now.

Find your platform by market (web analytics suites, privacy-first tools, product analytics, behavior and session tools, website and CRM platforms, or data pipelines), read its one page, and you’ll know what your numbers include. Where a platform has no documentation on bot handling, the page says so and lists exactly what we searched.

  • ✓ Is your analytics tool filtering disguised bots at all? The leaderboard ranks all 32 platforms from Strong down to None, with the reason for each grade in one line, so you can see where yours sits in seconds.
  • ✓ Which number in your dashboard is the filtered one? Each platform page answers that in its What you see row, and says so plainly when a platform gives you nothing to check.
  • ✓ Could the filter be switched off in your account? Some platforms document a disguised-bot layer and leave it off by default, or put it behind a paid plan. The Partial grades say what’s holding each one back.
  • ✓ Running GA4 alongside a privacy-first tool, a session recorder, or your store’s own reports? All six markets sit in this guide side by side, so you can compare what your whole stack actually catches, not just your main property.
  • ✓ Does your platform document nothing at all? One platform in this guide has no documented bot handling, and its page lists everywhere we looked before grading it None.

How This Guide Was Built

Jeff Sauer built and ran a digital marketing agency before founding MeasureU, where he has trained 50,000+ marketers. For this guide, the MeasureU team read each platform’s help center, developer documentation, and changelog starting September 24, 2026, then ran two more passes the same day: one on the close calls, then a full fresh pass on every platform that changed five grades. Every one of the 32 was graded, including the one platform with nothing documented. Every platform page shows its source. Where the platform documents its bot handling, the page links that doc; where nothing is documented, the page says so and lists what we searched.
